Hello Monday…

markrichardson:

Kate Bush’s cover of sexual healing. Now, Marvin Gaye’s is brilliant, but I think she makes the song her own. With her voice, and this kind of neo-Celtic arrangement, she gives it a different feel. Gaye’s song always struck me as profoundly sad. In part because he died soon after, I guess, and because his later years seemed absolutely miserable. But also in how it frames sex in a very drug-like way. You get to feeling a certain kind of sickness and then you call somebody and they take care of it and you can get through the day. Not saying sex needs to be accompanied by emotion, but if you look at the lyrics, this song is about sex as an exceedingly brief respite from misery. But Kate redeems it a little. Gives it a glimmer of hope.
